How it Works

Image

The FairScan ordering system uses a modified Palm Handheld device that allows for ordering to be undertaken by the method of scanning barcodes.  By scanning rather than writing the order process becomes more accurate and efficient.  The system was originally designed for Trade Fairs and show rooms, but it can also be used by sales reps out on the road.

With the use of a desktop/laptop orders can be printed instantly for customers.  Totals can be given at any time during the order process as well as advanced reports for the business such as total sales and most/least ordered.

Before an order is taken the product list and customer list is downloaded onto the handheld.  The system then relies on barcodes to record orders.  A barcode doesnt contain product codes or descriptions; instead it returns a number in which the handheld then matches to a product that is already stored in a database.  Any barcode can be used including industry standard EA13 barcodes or alternatively custom made barcodes can be used.  Even a mixture of both is possible.

Laptop & Handheld

Once a barcode is read, the information is stored on the handheld until a HotSync (handheld downloading to a desktop or laptop) has taken place.  The handhelds have the ability to store thousands of both customers and product details.  Once the order is finished and after a HotSync has taken place, a print out of the order is then available for the customer.

As mentioned the handhelds have the capacity to hold thousands of customers and products.  As a guide 1600 customers, 1600 products and the application only takes up 1mb of memory on the handheld.  All handhelds now have a minimum 7mb worth of memory which would require at least 10,000 customers and 15,000 to reach its capacity.
